Are Your Koi Overcrowded in their Pond?
Aaaahh….Another new day with my koi.
As I look out at my koi pond, nothing gives me greater pleasure than to see my beautiful koi swimming gracefully in the water. Today, my koi could not be happier as they are well cared for and completely safe. But I remember a time in the past when I had so many koi in my pond that it became overcrowded. In my inexperience, I thought ‘the more the merrier’, especially since my koi were so playful and seemed to enjoy being in a pack.
Here’s what my koi pond used to look like.

Too many koi
It didn’t take me long to discover how wrong I was.
When it comes to koi, it’s not always ‘the more the merrier.’
Too many koi in too small a space will bring stress to the koi and stressed-out koi fall sick easily and eventually die (that’s what happened to mine).
So how many is too many?
The general rule of thumb is each koi must have at least one and a half times its body length of individual space in square feet. That means a koi that is one foot long needs at least 18 square inches of space in your pond.
If you’r not sure how to calculate that, then it’s better to have less koi rather than more. It’s always safer to err on the conservative.
I wrote a report that details all about choosing koi, koi pond size and lots more and I’d like you to have it for FREE. Yup, that’s right…I’m giving you my 27 page report entitled ‘How to Keep Koi’.
